tried version 12 finally and not really impressed

I haven't followed the new development much but I thought I would try out version 12 and so far I think I will stick with version 11.

I added a folder that I know was well edited (tags) and the first thing I noticed was several album covers not showing in the releases view.  I played around with the tag editor a bit to see what was wrong and I see some some of the covers tagged as other (why is version 11 changing what tag to use, I always use the same method?) Anyway I then used version 12 to make them the "cover" art but it doesn't always show in the releases view afterwards.  One album, for example, with 2 cds, updated the picture but now shows the album as two albums, one without a picture even though these files now have the proper album picture tag.  I updated another album, with just one cd and actually just one track, so that the album picture is "cover" but it didn't update in the releases view.  So my experience is very inconsistent regarding this...not impressed.

Secondly, when I click the ... on an album and say to go to the music explorer, sometimes it goes to the correct folder but sometimes it goes to another folder that isn't correct and the funny thing is it seems to always go to this incorrect folder when it can't get it right..very bizarre.

I also can't believe there isn't a way to edit tags without adding them to the library but I voted in the features request survey to mention how this should be a feature.

I didn't get far in trying out this new version but just because of the above issues I don't even want to go further and will stay with version 11 because version 12 seems too buggy to me. Furthermore I find this new visual based view a little annoying. I prefer efficiency over a pretty interface, of course if you can have both that's great but it seems the pretty UI has taken precedence over everything else (like editing and management).  I understand this is just my opinion and it's not because I dislike change but if I wanted pretty over function I would have gone with another editor than helium in the first place.

I like that I can have both versions installed and will follow development but it would take a lot for me to upgrade completely to this new version..just my two cents.

>>I created a ticket for albums that won't show the cover art in the releases view.

Thanks, I have answered the ticket and updated it with the solution. You need to add {album version} as field in your picture naming to avoid to have colliding filenames (same artist, same album).

>>Shouldn't updates be reflected without having to restart the system.

Yes they should, I tried to reproduce this case on two of our test machines, unfortunately with no luck - it worked.

Possibly it migh thave been caused by a file lock or such? Anyway, updated should not need a restart.

This find just as in earlier versions of Helium, you will need to defined (in the Add music tool) it you would like to import pictures from tags or not.

Pictures from folders are always used since it is the most common and quickest operation.

Thanks for your feedback Marco.

We did some tests trying to reproduce your specific issues (changing cover art as well as browse album in Music Explorer), which worked during our tests. We used Helium 12.2 and MP3 files for the tests.

If possible we would like to assist you further with these issues, can you please contact us at support.imploded.com and describe the steps you performed when it did not worked?

Please attach one sample file for where the cover picture problem occurs if possible.

Thanks in advance.

ok I'll try to find some time to do this. I'm using flac files and not mp3s, maybe that's the difference.

I did some quick tests with FLAC files in the update just released and it seems to behave as it should.

If you have any time, please retest it and contact us as described above and we will assist you further.

Thank you Mikael, I appreciate the responses.  I just installed the latest version and I can't seem to replicate the error where it goes to the wrong album in the music explorer.

I created a ticket for albums that won't show the cover art in the releases view.  I added a couple pics to show this not working.  After looking further I noticed it seems to only be happening to albums with multiple CDS or albums where I have two different versions of the same album.  Sometimes it shows the cover for one of the CDS but not the other and sometimes for neither.  Version 11 shows them as separate albums but the cover art is showing for both albums. I put each CD in it's own folder on the hard drive (usually titled CD1 and CD2) and each version in it's own folder and put the version in brackets like (deluxe edition).  Version 11 doesn't seem to have a problem with this but maybe version 12 does.

I found a different odd thing while puttering around. I noticed one of my albums was showing the wrong cover.  I noticed that it was using a picture that was in the albums folder rather than the cover I tagged in the files. I don't keep the pictures in the album folders so I deleted this stray pic and had to reapply the tags hoping that would refresh the cover but it didn't.  I went to the album picture folder and noticed the correct picture but helium wasn't displaying.  I shut the program and reopened and it was showing correctly then.  Shouldn't updates be reflected without having to restart the system.  If no, then maybe having a refresh button would be helpful.  Also, shouldn't the default for importing be to use the information in the tags and not taking a picture from the folder itself?  I tried to find an options section for importing but don't see anything.

Every time I give 12 a try, I last about 5 minuted (or it crashes) It's not intuitive at all,  a simple two operative search will just hang, it won't even catch the update to 12.2   Just awful.

@Russ S:

That sounds of course not correct, but it is hard to say exactly why it crashes without knowing more in detail about what you are doing. We did a quick test with different searches (using most recent 12.2 version), which worked well. If possible, please let us know more about which tasks you perform and we will assist you further.

It would also be valuable to know which operating system and database engine you are using to give you a better answer.

If you need any further assistance (database analysing, log reviewing etc), please contact us at support.imploded.com and we will help you out further.

That way is generally much quicker than via the forums, since we are not constantly watching them.

I have recently upgraded to version 12.414760 and I am sorry I did. I share the same sentiments about function over a pretty face which really isn't very pretty anyways. I am finding this version to be very slow to do anything. I have my mp3 collection on on a WD Mycloud NAS it is about 50,000 files so it is a significant size and I am using the SQL compact database so maybe that is the problem?

Typing a search into the search box while viewing files hangs up and I have to click many times in the box to keep the cursor alive to enable typing.

After removing a track from a playlist it will take about 2.5 minutes for the list to refresh

When I am playing back a playlist containing about 140 tracks I have it set to crossfade but it will not crossfade the audio actually hangs in silence for 3 seconds before the next track begins to play. I am using an M-audio delta 44 sound card if that makes any difference.

These issues are only a result of 4 hours using the new version hence, I am not happy.

I was using version 11 on the same system and it worked great.

Hello,

Sql Compact will definitively slow things down with that amount of tracks, we are reviewing to replace that database engine for a future version.

The values you are writing about seems extremely slow though, so they are most likely caused by somehting else (viruskillers etc).

I will comment this further in the support ticket you sent to us.

I have to agree. I am using Helium since 2006. The last Version 11 was a good and stable version.

The new 12 Version ist very buggy and even crashes when playing files from a queue (arbitrarily when switching

to the next track - maybe only whe auto queue is activatet - not confirmed). I guess i can not switch back to 11 cause i had added a lot files into the 12 database. Dont get me wrong, Helium is imo still the best Programm for my MP3 Database, but there are a lot of bugs in there now.

P.S. sorry for my bad english

P.P.S using Build 12.4.14760.0
